Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!

Shoe designers for the past few years have taken a new path in creating fancy, edgy, and some cute looking shoes. They have taken a more architectural approach to them, giving them a sense of structure and reaching for new heights (literally) with almost twelve inch heels! As seen in Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 Runway show, he introduced his killer 10 inch heels. Here are some of the shoes that I thought were interesting.

What Fashion Means To Me

•November 25, 2009 • 1 Comment

To answer that question, I’d have to take it back, maybe 20 years! Yeah now don’t start trying to guess how old I am. Come to think of it, seems like a lot of years, but I don’t know where they went. Well, fashion to me, is art. Art is the way we express ourselves through paintings, sculptures, writing, and even through how we dress and how we convey our personal style.

Ever since I was a little girl, my Dad would dress me up and take pictures of me; like I was his little model. I was so young I don’t even remember him doing that, but I’ve seen pictures. That’s the earliest [picture] memory I have of myself in stylish clothes. I grew up in a family where image is everything. You either have to look good before stepping out of the house, or don’t step out at all!

Fast forwarding my life up until 5 years ago, right before starting college, I wasn’t sure on what I wanted to do. What ever it was though, I knew it would be something related to art; that being said, I ended up studying Architecture. At first I hated it then I loved it, and sometimes I just didn’t want to be around it. Long story short, it was definitely a love/ hate relationship.

By the last semester of college and half of my brain cells totally burned, I started noticing people on the trains, streets, restaurants of New York. What I noticed about them was, that they were all ‘dressed to impress’, meaning that each and everyone of them was thinking about their image before they stepped out of their house. Same principle my family raised me by. So there it was, my love for fashion started. Everyday, I’d look at the people on the streets and be inspired by their style, apply it to myself, and filter out all things that didn’t suit me. I began going to the most fashionable areas of NY (such as SoHo, Upper East Side, etc) to see what the latest in style was; and also read magazines on a regular basis.

That alone, inspired me to a level where I made up my mind- FINALLY!!! … and said to myself that this is what I want to do. Fashion is my path to success, and freedom.

Fashion to me = freedom, success, empowerment. And all things in between. If you look around, fashion is everywhere. You’ll hardly see someone walking around naked; so obviously they have something on. Whether you’re in to fashion or not, you can not avoid it. You wear fashion on a daily basis in your own personal manner. So all the people who dislike fashionistas out there, look in the mirror please, because you’re a little fashionista in your own little world as well.

Bargain Hunting in New York 11.25.09

As I promised last week, that I would give ideas and suggestions on where to shop and when to shop in the ever expensive New York. Here I am again…
Depending on the look you’re going for, whether it’s urban, or more sophisticated, choose your clothing store wisely. For an urban or a contemporary look, you obviously have your favorite stores that you go to, but once in a while its good to change stores and locations and check out other places that might have a sale going on. Stores such as Urban Outfitters, on 6th Avenue and 14th street, always has a sale on the lower level of the store. Whereas, the one in SoHo, on Houston and Broadway usually doesn’t offer sales (maybe seasonal only).
Clothing stores that offer a more high-end but affordable looks, such as GAP, always have a clearance section. The one on 7th Avenue and 42nd Street, has a clearance section (for women) on the upper level of the building. As for the one on 8th Ave. and 23rd Street rarely has any sales at all.
Also, check out on your favorite stores’ websites for new locations coming near you. Most retail stores have a grand opening sale, such as GAP and Banana Republic that just opened in SoHo on Broadway, had a 30% off discount on all items.
Hope these tidbits helped a lot and check out for a new bargaining post next week.

Carey Mulligan…The New “It” Girl

Last night I had the chance to watch the new movie “An Education”, starring Carey Mulligan. This movie is so intriguing. Mulligan’s role as “Jenny”, a strong, intelligent, goal-driven 16 year old who will do anything to fulfill her dreams, will keep you thinking what her next move will be in the movie.

Mulligan, who is actually 24 years old has that cute girl charm in the movie and perhaps in real life as well. Her bubbly smile and strong personality are possibly the reasons why Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, calls her the “new ‘It’ girl”. I am sure she will be getting a lot of film offers in the near future and I will definitely go watch her movies.

Here’s the trailer for “An Education”. Highly recommended.

Black or White?

•November 22, 2009 • 2 Comments

When this song came out, I was too young to understand the real meaning behind it. I always used to ask myself, “Why are these faces changing so quick from Chinese, White, then Black?”.  One minute the face belonged to Tyra Banks, the next to some Chinese lady, and then to a random dark skinned guy. While in New York last night, just walking around the city, a vendor was selling some MJ DVD’s of his most famous songs/videos. One of them, of course was Black or White.

While watching this video, I came to the conclusion that it was about race. About how it doesn’t matter what your color is. And what really matters is what is inside, your personality. I truly believe that MJ’s numerous physical transformations lead him to write/ and compose that song. I guess it was his way of justifying why his complexion was changing so drastically. Well, whether he started off his career as black, and ended it white, it really doesn’t matter. The bigger picture is the great music he shared with the world, and the love he received for that.

La Villa

If you’re bored out of your mind eating the same boring, greasy pizza that was not even made in a real brick oven, then head over to La Villa, for the real deal. La Villa is located in Brooklyn, on 5th Avenue between Garfield Place and First Street. For starters, they give you their signature focaccia bread topped with sweet onions and herbs (see pic below). For entrees, you can choose anything from their special brick oven pizzas, to the meaty lasagna, and even some healthy options with their grilled chicken and arugula wraps. Prices are reasonable, any where from $5-$20. The ambience of the restaurant is warm, and the service is great!

Hungry yet?

Dior Couture S/S ‘09

•November 21, 2009 • 1 Comment

It’s hard to look at these images and not imagine the amount of hours and hard work that went in to each piece. No wonder they are sold for unbelievable prices. Dior, delivers every time in their Couture collections. In this particular collection from Spring/Summer 2009, it seems like the creations were inspired by 18th century women’s fashions. Dior is known internationally for high quality, and this quality sure comes with a high price. Whether or not one can afford these designs, it doesn’t hurt the eyes to look at them and be inspired.

Frank Stella

Printer, painter, sculptor; one word to describe Frank Stella: Crazy! Why? Not because I think his designs and creations are crazy, but because his mind is totally outside the box. Which means crazy in a great way!

Talk about deconstructionism. This man knows what he’s doing and is doing it the right way (even though there is no right or wrong in art). He understands what he wants out of his work and delivers it every single time. Whether you think his creations are out of this world, or just plain ugly, you know for sure that the amount of time and thought that went into each piece, should very much be appreciated.

At one point of his life, Stella decided to be an architect, but the architecture world can only handle one crazy Frank (Frank Gehry being the first one). Here are some of his painting, and sculptures.
